Book Giveaway #1: Weekend Knitting!

I’m launching my week of book giveaways with my favorite one!  The other 4 books are ones that really aren’t my style, so I want them to go to people who will enjoy them, but today’s is a book that I really do like – I was given 2 copies, so I get to keep one, and give the other away to a lucky reader!

weekend knitting

Weekend Knitting, by Melanie Falick, was first released in hardcover in 2003, and re-released in this paperback version last year.  It features mostly pretty simple projects, treating knitting as a relaxing weekend hobby, nothing too intense, but also nothing too boring… I love these Argyle Slippers!

There are a couple of nice brioche accessory projects, which makes me wonder, why have I never tried brioche stitch?!  Love how it looks in 2 colors:

Including a wide range of home projects, bags, accessories, garments, and some kid stuff (see all the projects on ravelry), the book has a style that will appeal to most knitters.  I’m not a sweater knitter, but this Unisex Knock-Around Cashmere Pullover has me thinking about making one:

If you know me, you know how I love games, so I was happy to see a couple of different game-related projects here, fitting with the relaxing weekend theme:

Scattered throughout are also lots of weekend-y extras, like several recipes, lists of movies and books with knitting, hand massage techniques for knitters….

So, to win my extra copy of Weekend Knitting, leave a comment on this post telling us your favorite relaxing weekend activity, or what you wish you had more time to do… for me, that would be reading – ever since I quit my day job to be full-time self-employed (almost 2 years ago!) I haven’t had any time in my life to read books, since any “free” time is spent knitting, or doing something else that’s fun and relaxing, but still work-related….

I’ll pick a winner next Monday (April 5th) around 3pm.  I’m sorry, but I need to limit these giveaways to within the US to keep my shipping costs low.

(And a note about this week of book giveaways – since I’m giving away 5 books this week, and I really want each of them to go to a home where they’ll be used and enjoyed, please only comment to win the books that you truly want.  If this book doesn’t appeal to you, just wait and see if any of the books later in the week are more your style, and only comment on those – thanks!)

  1. Oh I LOVE this book! I recently flipped through it at my boyfriend's mom's house and I have no idea how I didn't buy it a long time ago. I would love to have a copy.Favorite weekend activities: having time to cook long involved gourmet-ish (or at least tasty) vegan dinners, yoga, knitting with a cat curled up next to me, and reading. I wish I had more time to start my garden! It's being ignored right now (sad). At least spring is finally here so I can start going on some long bikerides.

  3. My favorite weekend activity is going new places and taking photos! I know it sounds like a lot of work to get up and out of the house and travel, but during the week I never go anywhere. It's always work, home for lunch, back to work, home for dinner, sleep, back to work, wash, rinse, and repeat! So it's such a joy to be able to go somewhere where there are new things to see and do and enjoy! It gets me through the week where I see and do the same things all the timeOfcourse, with the Weekend Knitting in my hands my favorite thing to do on weekends might change to…more knitting!

  4. I wish I had more time to go hiking and biking! I do a lot of amazing things on weekends – knit, garden, cook, bake – and by the time I do those things, I feel like I never have enough free weekend time to go for hikes (getting out of NYC can be a pain sometimes…) or long bike rides!

  5. I love to spend the weekend wandering the seawall with my son and husband. But what I wish I could do is spend a lazy Sunday morning in bed, reading, and drinking coffee. Unfortunately, my son doesn't see that as much fun as I do.

  6. Weekends are when I like to sew. I can pick up knitting when I have short breaks in my day on weekdays, but sewing seems to take longer periods of concentration. I'm trying to start designing some clothes for myself.

  7. I wish I had more time to write. As a college student, I have essays, 100-page readings, and other miscellaneous goings on to keep me from being able to do what I want to, and writing is a big one. Just to add insult to injury, I'm taking a writing class, but it's not at all what I had dreamed it would be, and it's turned writing into a chore rather than a hobby.I'm just hoping that'll change once I'm done with the class! At least knitting is something I can do while in class!

  8. I had a baby 20 short days ago… so right now, the relaxing thing I'd Really Like To Do on the weekends is SLEEP. In my real (not-new-baby-having) life, I wish for more time to read and sew. I love the Luggy Bonnet in this book and saw a number of other projects that are interesting too! 🙂

  9. That book looks fabulous (I love/love/love the game boards). This past Saturday, I somehow managed to practice yoga, try two new cookie recipes, finish knitting my Bamboozled headband, spend some time writing, and paint my toenails, all without yelling at my children. Getting to do ALL my favorite activities is weekend relaxation at it's finest.

  10. My favorite activity is a toss up between reading a book outside when it is sunny and going for a bike ride with my son. I save the knitting for the weeknights while catching up on tv or a movie.

  13. Since I'm backpacking around at the mo, moving from pillar to post, I really miss having the space and time to bake something yummy, make a cup of tea and SIT and enjoy it all. No pressure, no thoughts of having to move on or pack up again, book flights or find hostels. Just me, my thoughts, a cuppa and possibly some lovely little knits!I've never seen this book before but am so taken with the game knits and those little argyle slippers are beautiful! The size of the projects as well are perfect. With all the travelling I have lost the ability to commit to a huge garment knit, my brain can't seem to process it all. Thanks for the give-away, such a generous idea…(p.s. I just arrived in the USA today, and am staying with a friend so can provide a US postal address…just in case you were wondering why a backpacker was commenting on this give-away 🙂

The argyle slippers are a perfect x-mas gift and are in my future I can just tell.My favorite relaxing weekend activity (spring) is to work in the garden with the family until almost exhausted and them sit outside with a glass of white wine and my current knitting project and enjoy spring.

  21. My favorite weekend activity is knitting, preferably outside in the sun and preferably with friends. I am a student in the thick of a degree in mathematics and cant allow myself to knit during the week or else I won't get any work done. What I need most is good ideas for projects that I can finish in one weekend, otherwise I have to leave something unfinished for awhile and depending on the project I may never finish it, or I will and won't do any homework that week! This looks like the perfect solution in a really nice book. Also I love the argyle slippers! Thanks for the generous giveaways!

  22. Oh how I miss my pre-children weekend activities– all of them! Reading, knitting, sleeping in, cooking complicated delicious things, packing a bag and running to Seattle or the coast for a night on a whim! Life post-kids is awesome too, just way more fast-paced and structred.

  26. my favorite saturdaymorning/afternoon activity would defenatly be: sleep, read a little, sleep some more, get up and make tea, go back to bed, reed some, drink tea, sleep some, read more with a hot cup of tea in my hand, sleep, read, drink repeat… If i have a free saturday and maybe a secret stash of chocolate near my bed I can keep this up till 3 or even 4 in the afternoon. After that I get up, cycle to the market to get flowers which will be really cheap by this time as all the sellers are starting to pack up. quickly pick up some fruit and veg for the week (whatever is left at the market really). Go home-shower-change into something pretty and meet my friends. When they ask me if I've been doing anything nice so far this weekend I really only have to smile and they'll know it's been one of those saturdays…lazy sundayafternoons (also rare) usually include some yarn and needles… so your lovely giveaway book would be very much appreciated!! Untill it arives I think I might try out some of that game knitting you posted earlier, that seems fun.

  27. Oh I love this book!! I would read more also on the weekend if I had time. I'm surrounded by my fam and when I read, I totally shut out the world; ignoring anyone and everyone around me. I wouldn't trade that though. Reading is my fave therapy. I have been knitting ALOT lately and Weekend knits would definitely be used in my care! Thank you for the giveaway week!!! You rock!

I otherwise have a hard time focusing on only one thing and am easily distracted by other noises. When the only thing I can hear is water, then I'm free to space out, think about something that's bothering me, or just remember which muscles go where…

It is on my wishlist now.Anyway, one of my favorite relaxing weekend activities is the beach with a good book and some knitting, maybe a few snacks. I get to watch my son dig around in the sand and have a little time to myself as well.

I wish I had more time (and will) to get back to yoga because it was invigorating and relaxing at the same time…must…resist…urge…to…knit…The book is one that I found early on in my short knitting life. I actually bought quite a bit of the Lamb's Pride yarn for the brioche scarf and hat with the plan to make many gifts of such for my unsuspecting friends and family members. It was my plan to acquire the book someday. Maybe that someday will be this weekend and my brioche-production plan will be resurrected almost in sync with Easter 🙂
